Have you been looking in the mirror and wondering what you can do about some of the changes that you see looking back at you? While getting older is inevitable, it is possible to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as you age.
What Are Wrinkles?
Part of the natural aging process, wrinkles are lines that form on your skin. They may vary in size and shape and are most obvious on the areas of the skin that get the most exposure to sun such as the face, hands and arms.
While your genetics play some role in your predisposition for wrinkles, other factors include sun exposure, age, stress, gender and repeated expressions such as frowning or laughing. As you age, the natural oils in your skins can cause dryness, which makes wrinkles more obvious and the layer of fat beneath the skin that provides a youthful appearance begins to diminish making wrinkles more apparent as well.
How Do You Prevent Wrinkles?
While wrinkles do occur as most individuals get older, there are things that you can do to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. At the top of the list is wearing sunscreen daily whether you’re headed to the beach or just running errands around town. Getting a sun tan, and especially a sunburn, can prematurely age your skin, accelerating the aging of your skin. If you smoke or drink alcohol, both of those habits can contribute to skin aging as well. Other tips to slow the appearance of aging is to eat a well balanced diet, exercise regularly and moisturize your skin regularly.
