Psoriasis

Is dry, flaky skin causing you pain and embarrassment? Psoriasis may be to blame.

What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that develops when a person’s immune system sends faulty signals and tells the body’s skin cells to grow too quickly. As a result, new skin cells form in days, rather than weeks and the body does not shed these excess skin cells. The skin cells instead pile up on the surface of the skin, which causes patches of psoriasis and lesions to appear. Psoriasis often runs in families, and many patients have one or more family members who also have psoriasis.

While there are a couple different kinds of psoriasis, the most common is plaque psoriasis, which accounts for 80% of patients and is characterized by thick and patchy skin. Patches of plaque are most commonly found on the knees, elbows, back and scalp. While not contagious, psoriasis can be bothersome and uncomfortable. Psoriasis can cause sufferers itching, embarrassment, pain and can interfere with their daily activities. Fortunately, psoriasis can be treated.
